Why Was a Savior Necessary?
The Argument in One Page
CHRISTOS FELLOWSHIP · SUNDAY DISCUSSION 25 July 2026
Reading rule: The fact of the atonement is settled (Register 1). Only the mechanism is under discussion (Register 3). If every premise below were wrong, the cross would stand unaffected.
The Premises
| P1 | God is self-existent. There is nothing outside Him. (Ex. 3:14; Acts 17:28) |
| P2 | God is light; in Him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5) |
| P3 | His purity is an ongoing separation of light from dark — so admitting darkness is not distasteful to Him but self-annihilating. |
| P4 | God is love. (1 John 4:8) |
| P5 | Love cannot be satisfied alone, nor by a compelled response. |
| P6 | ∴ Free others must exist, capable of genuine refusal. |
| P7 | Genuine refusal requires real access to the alternative — proximity to evil. |
| P8 | Moral disorder is conservative: it does not fade, and later good cannot reach back to cancel earlier wrong. |
The Contradiction
| Free creatures must exist (P4–P6). · They must be near evil (P7).
God cannot abide evil in His presence (P2–P3). · There is nowhere outside God to put them (P1). These four cannot all be satisfied — unless a region can be sealed off within God. |
The Resolution
| P9 | God demonstrably can partition — the rebel angels are sequestered, not annihilated. Continued existence, terminated fellowship. (2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6) |
| P10 | The partition is the creation, made and held by the Son — who can look upon evil without expelling it. (John 1:3) This is why the Son, not the Father, is Creator. |
| P11 | Because the domain’s exit opens onto the Father, its law must be as exact as His. Hence sin genuinely incurs death; hence eye for eye — exactness, not vengeance. |
| P12 | ∴ No creature can pay: his good works arrive too late (P8), and paying in full costs him the existence the payment was meant to preserve. |
The Chain to the Cross
Remedy must be generated inside the domain, by one innocent and sovereign within it
→ the Creator incarnates; a real body, killable, carrying no sentence
→ dies unjustly — in an exact ledger every sin demands a death, so every death demands a sin; His is a credit with no matching debt
→ rises, because the sentence found nothing in Him to grip — a treasury requires a living treasurer (Heb. 7:25)
→ administers it as gatekeeper: His domain, His law, His payment, His threshold (John 14:6)
→ applied on reception — because imposing it would destroy at the last step the very freedom the whole creation was built to protect.
Two distinctions that keep this from collapsing:
- He bore our liability, not our disharmony — laid on him, a burden held, not a stain caught (Isa. 53:6). The wrath gripped the sin, never the Man.
- The cross generated the answer to every sentence; it did not execute every sentence. A pattern applied, not a stock drawn down — so it never runs out, and cancels nothing until brought into phase with it.
The Conclusion
The Savior is not an accommodation. He is a structural necessity — the only bridge between a holiness that cannot tolerate darkness and a love that requires free creatures who can choose it. At-one-ment: what sin partitioned (Isa. 59:2), alignment with the Son rejoins (Eph. 2:13).
Pick Your Fight — Where to Push
Choose one. Naming the premise you doubt is more useful than doubting the whole.
- P3 — Is God’s purity really constituted as separation? Does the argument survive without it?
- P7 — Could God have made creatures free to choose only among goods? Must freedom include access to evil?
- P8 — Why can’t grace simply heal disorder? Is disorder truly conserved, or is that a physics metaphor overreaching?
- P11 — Could the Son have run a lenient world and cleaned everyone at the gate? Why must the inside be as severe as the outside?
- Reception — If the remedy is sufficient for all, why not apply it to all? Is the answer freedom — or is it arbitrary?
“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” — Romans 5:10
